Shockwave Therapy
Erectile Dysfunction, also know as impotence, is the inability to obtain or maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. Today, thousands of men are affected by this condition. In fact, recent studies indicate that over 50% of men have some form of erectile dysfunction. Shockwave therapy or Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LiSWT) is a relatively new non-surgical, non-invasive modality used to treat erectile dysfunction. Although the word “shock” can sound unpleasant, there is actually no shock involved, but rather sound waves. This technology is based on the same treatment used to break up kidney stones, yet at a much lower intensity to break up calcifications within the structures of the penis which allow for erections. Compared to standard treatment options, this therapy is aimed at physically correcting the erectile mechanism that allows men to have natural, spontaneous erections.
How does shockwave therapy work?
Shockwave therapy is an in-office procedure that focuses low intensity pulses (waves) at deep tissues within the perineal area at the base of the penis and the shaft of the penis. Shockwave treatments are performed over a period of time, requiring several (3-12) visits. During treatment, these shockwaves create anatomical stresses that promote physiological processes meant to regenerate blood vessels and improve circulation – a process known as neovascularization. Increased circulation allows for the natural engorgement of blood to the penis, which is necessary for a sustained erection.
The benefits of Shockwave Therapy include:
Enhanced sensitivity
Improved blood flow to the area
Increased sexual stamina
Stronger and firmer erections
Increased size of your penis
More sexual endurance

At Men’s Health, we are utilizing Eclipse EVIVE pulse wave technology. This machine includes a hand-held device that delivers treatment to targeted areas. Prior to commencing treatment, the patient’s perineal and penile areas will be coated with a numbing gel. This gel may also be applied to the tip of the probe. During treatment, soundwaves will be directed to various areas around the shaft of the penis. While patients may experience a slight tingling, they should not be uncomfortable or experience pain. Typically, treatment sessions will last between 15 to 20 minutes. Your provider will discuss the number of recommended treatments during your initial assessment. This number may be adjusted based on results. Because this is a non-invasive procedure, patients will not require anesthesia. Patients may return to normal activities as outlined by their provider.
Is shockwave therapy right for me?
Shockwave therapy is one of several options used for treating erectile dysfunction. Often patients will benefit from a combination therapy of shockwave and p-shot. A thorough assessment of the patient’s overall health, erectile history, and lifestyle will be considered prior to treatment. Discussion will also cover treatment options that the patient has tried and their efficacy. Remember, all consultations and treatments are completely confidential and one-on-one with your provider.
